Visualisation tangible : manipuler l’information pour se la représenter.
Ces visualisations ont été pensées comme des mises en forme d’information tangibles. Sans s’opposer aux visualisations d’informations sur écran, elles posent la question suivante : Que serait une visualisation mobilisant le sens du toucher, que l’on peut composer et modifier manuellement ? Lieux de rencontres et d'échanges, les colloques internationaux offrent une possibilité pour les chercheurs de s’envisager comme membre d’une communauté. La conférence DRS20181 , regroupant la communauté internationale de recherche en design, en fut un exemple. Bien qu'elles n'aient pas été produites pendant la conférence mais après, ces visualisations ont été imaginées comme un possible support d'atelier, permettant aux participants de manipuler les données de l’événement. Composées à la main avec des papiers colorés découpés au laser, elles utilisent les données d’un fichier publié en ligne recensant les 615 intervenants inscrits2 . Chaque visualisation propose des regroupements par pays, continents, langues ou affiliations. La mise en forme manuelle, demandant du temps et de la précision, prend le contre-pied des visualisations informatiques et place la composition au centre du processus de représentation de données. Cette production, réalisée en parallèle d’un travail d’écriture (Benony et al., 2019), donne à voir autrement les questions de format de publications, de modèles et de normes de la recherche. Tangible visualization: manipulating information to represent it.
These visualizations have been thought as tangible formatting of information. Without opposing it to the visualization of information on screen, these tangible formatting of information pose the following question: What would be a visualization mobilizing the sense of touch, that we could compose and modify directly with our hands? As a place of meeting and exchange, international conferences are an opportunity for each participant to see himself as a community. The DRS20183 conference, bringing together the design research community, was an example of this. Although they were not produced during the conference but afterwards, these visualizations were imagined as a possible workshop support, to allow participants to manipulate the data of the event. Composed by hand with colored paper cut-outs, they are based on a file published online by the conference organizer listing the 615 registered speakers4 . Each visualization features a ranking of speakers by country, continent, language or affiliation. Manual formatting, which requires time and precision, takes the opposite direction from computer visualizations and places composition at the center of the data representation process. This production, carried out in parallel with writing work (Benony et al., 2019), gives a different view of the issues of publication formats, research models and standards are just a few of the issues involved.
